THE Bury Times has laid firm foundations for the future with the official opening of our new headquarters.
Bury mayor Councillor Paul Nesbit, accompanied by his mayoress wife Mrs Shirley Nesbit, unveiled a plaque at yesterday's (Thurs June 21) ceremony.
Pictured at the function are (from left) Mrs Shirley Nesbit; Coun Paul Nesbit; Mr Jim Brown, chairman of Newsquest and Mr Paul Davidson, chief executive of Newsquest, owners of the BT.
The newly-opened building in Market Street, adjacent to our previous home, takes us well and truly into the new millennium and our third century of publication.
Staff originally moved into the purpose-built offices in February and yesterday's event marked the official opening.
After unveiling a commemorative plaque, which is located in the reception, Coun Nesbit told the guests: "A lot of councillors sometimes fear the Press. But I don't.
"I've always been very friendly with the staff at the Prestwich Guide and the Bury Times and our relationship has blossomed as it has gone on."
The mayor continued: "If we have something to say, you say it on our behalf.
"I wish other councillors could have the same good relationship I have with the Bury Times. You are our friends and we are your friends."
Mr Jim Brown said: "I worked in Lancashire for a number of years and I am all too well aware of the history of the Bury Times and its importance within the local community."
Acknowledging the previous HQ was unsuitable for a modern newspaper, he added: "I am delighted with the opening of the new offices and feel the staff of the Bury Times now have a building they deserve."
