NEARLY a million pieces of junk mail are received each year by the relatives of East Lancashire people who have died, a survey has revealed.
And the mailshots are costing UK business more than £53 million a year.
Data specialist the REaD Group is tackling the problem by establishing a Bereavement Register which removes the names and addresses of deceased people from mailing lists, databases and telemarketing files.
The free service has already been used by 1.3 million people in the UK, stopping 41 million pieces of mail being sent to grieving families.
To register a relative who has passed away, members of the public need to fill in a form available on the internet at www.the-bereavement-register.org.uk or call the Bereavement Register Helpline on 0870 600 7222 or contact a local Co-Op Funeral Service outlet.
