THREE teenagers attempted to foil police by stealing a car number plate before carrying out a petrol station drive-off.
The registration S751 KCK was taken from a black VW Polo in Belgrave Road, Darwen, and put on to a Vauxhall Astra on the lane up to Darwen Tower at 9am on Sunday.
Ten minutes later the car, which had a green learner sticker on the rear, was filled with £20 worth of petrol at the Shell Service Station in Blackburn Road, Darwen, and the youths drove off without paying.
The stolen plate was then dumped in the garden of a nearby house. It is now being checked for finger prints.
The driver was white, aged 18 and was wearing a light coloured baseball cap, white trainers, dark tracksuit top with light coloured sleeves and light coloured tracksuit bottoms.
Sergeant Andrea Bradbury of Darwen police said: "We have had no reports of a stolen Astra so far.
"The thieves could have been from out of the area or perhaps the car belongs to one of their parents. We would urge anybody with information to come forward."
