VOLUNTEERS who mounted a round-the-clock nest-watch scheme to stop thieves stealing rare Black-Tailed Godwit eggs on the Fylde coast are being given a special thank-you by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
Their determination not to let the eggs fall into the hands of unscrupulous egg collectors was being rewarded at a get together at the Ribble Discovery Centre, Lytham St Annes today.
The team of more than 50 volunteers including members of RSPB, Fylde Bird Club and the Lancashire Police kept watch over the nests day and night for six weeks ensuring that eight Godwit chicks hatched successfully.
RSPB regional manager Laurence Rose said: "Without the volunteers we could have been facing another bleak year when these birds failed to produce any young in the area just because a small minority see nothing wrong in stealing eggs from the nests of some of this country's rarest breeding birds."
