A SINGLE mother-of-four is worried an asbestos garage at the bottom of her garden could be damaging the health of her children.
Saffron McGurke, 35, of Ribblesdale Avenue, Accrington feels unable to stop her kids and others from using the derelict garage.
She said: "My ex-husband called the council last year to get the garage removed. He built a fence at the bottom of the garden to stop my children getting in, but they still manage it. The council have been round to inspect it and confirmed that it is asbestos, but nothing has been done."
The garage, built by the last resident of the council-owned property, is easily accessible to her children, the youngest of which is just 15 months old.
She added: "Kids are going in the garage at night and kicking the panels in. It seems dangerous to me, but if you tell them not to go near something, they go straight there.
"I have even called the police and they said there was nothing they could do about it."
Matters were made worse this week when the fire brigade had to be called to the garage to put out a fire.
Steve Todd, Head of Environmental Health for Hyndburn Borough Council, said: "We know about it and we are making arrangements to have it removed.
"It is very, very low risk, but has to be dealt with in a certain way, and arrangements have to be made for it to be received at the tip. We are working to get the job done."
