THE first allotment to allow access for disabled people has opened in Blackpool -- with help from Marton Rotary Club.
The plot, at Cherry Tree Allotments, Cherry Tree Road, has a specially adapted pathway, greenhouse and foundations which will enable disabled people to make full use of it.
It sets a new standard in disabled access to allotments and was developed and completed by Marton Rotarians who handed it over to the council-run Langdale Centre on Langdale Road for use by its clients.
Nick Gradwell, of the Langdale Centre, said that they were thrilled at the prospect of the new allotment.
"We think this could be the first allotment of its kind. Marton Rotary Club have done all the work themselves and we are very pleased with the results," he said.
At the handing over of the allotment to Langdale Centre staff and clients on June 22, Marton Rotary President David Cowley said: "This has been a great effort from my team. As well as fund-raising for the greenhouse, Rotarians have rolled their sleeves up, and you can see the results."
