THE election is over and the Labour Party has been returned to office for a second term by a resounding victory. We have seen history in the making. A government returned with virtually the same large majority has not happened in modern times.
The three Fylde coast Labour MPs all held their parliamentary seats and will return to Westminster when parliament resumes. They are competent, hard working and experienced and will continue to serve their respective areas well.
Gordon Marsden and Joan Humble received 50 per cent of the votes cast in their two seats -- an achievement that they and the party can be proud of. The results clearly show they enjoy the confidence of their electorate.
Despite Tory tactics, the choice was clearly between deep, damaging cuts or investment in health, education and other public services that matter to a great many people.
The majority of voters wisely chose the latter. The Labour Government has clearly put improvements for society as a whole at the top of their agenda. They have been given the opportunity to build on the foundations for a better country laid over the past four years.
Much has been said of the lower number of people voting. There are many theories as to why this happened, although in itself it is not unique. Joan Humble after being declared elected referred to this and said that "unfortunately many people only vote if they feel there is something to vote against".
Despite everything, the majority who voted chose to support Labour and may I take this opportunity to thank those who did so on behalf of my MP and the constituency party.
