Leigh Centurions 84 York Wasps 1
THE Centurions ended their NFP programme just as they started - in total domination writes Mike Hulme
Poor York, rooted at the foot of the table and with only one win all season, were taken to the cleaners as Leigh posted their biggest win of the campaign.
And York were right up Tim's Street as the veteran prop celebrated the final league game of his career with two second half tries as well as showing hidden talents by popping over four conversions.
It was slaughter in the sun for York as they went down to their 19th successive defeat. Leigh crossed for 15 tries in all to set up an intriguing play-off tie at home to Oldham next Sunday.
And coach Paul Terzis can't wait for the play-offs to start. "We have only been beaten twice this season and are unbeaten at Hilton Park for 16 months. If we continue that form, we'll be going to the Grand Final again.
"We've made Hilton Park a fortress and I don't think Oldham will be relishing coming here."
Even without half a dozen regulars, Leigh made their intentions clear from the start when they engineered a try inside 75 seconds from Phil Kendrick.
By the fifth minute Leigh were 10-0 ahead with the first of Neil Turley's hat-trick.
The one-way traffic continued as Leigh crossed for five more first half tries.
Turley took his season's tally to 53 by scoring twice more and there were other touchdowns from Michael Watts (2) and Willie Swann.
It was much the same story in the second half as Leigh more than doubled their 38-0 interval lead.
Kendrick again set the ball rolling and two tries in two minutes from Andy Fairclough and Chris Morley took Leigh beyond the 50 point mark yet again.
Swann unselfishly put Street in on the hour, the prop cheekily taking the conversion himself to make it 60-0.
The procession of tries continued in the final quarter as York's misery went on. Sub Alan Hadcroft sent Dave Ingram over with his first touch to give Simon Svabic his eighth successful kick and confirm his position as the NFP leading points scorer.
The final eight minutes brought three more tries from Street, Ingram and another sub, Alan Cross.
York saved a complete whitewash when stand-off Gareth Oulton put over an injury time field goal.
Leigh: Turley, Ingram, Kendrick, Fairclough, Watts, Svabic, Swann, Street, Hamilton, Whittle, Bristow, Morley, Johnson. Subs: Leathem, Hadcroft, Cross, Norman. Attendance: 2433.
