BLACKBURN with Darwen Council's commitment to lifelong learning has been endorsed by the latest government statistics on local authority spending on education.

The figures show that the three national funding targets have been achieved. These included money for schools going directly to school budgets, an increase in funding for pupils and a reduction in 'core' strategic management costs.

The council is continuing to spend more on education than the Government recommends and all extra money provided for education was passed on directly to the education service.

Blackburn with Darwen Council ranks 45th out of 150 local authorities for the level of directly-delegated funds to schools.

The level of funding per pupil exceeds comparable figures for both Lancashire and Blackpool County Councils.

Councillor Mahfooz Hussain, Executive Member for Education and lifelong learning said: "I am pleased that the league tables recognise the priority that the council continues to give to raising standards in the borough and the extra funding that has been made available for schools."
