COUNCILLORS have backed a plan for a new amusement arcade in a run-down area of Accrington.
An old shop near to the junction of King Street and Blackburn Road is set to be the venue for the new facility after it was given permission by Hyndburn's development services committee.
Council planning officers said the scheme should be welcomed because shops and houses on the road, which runs from Accrington to Church, were in a poor condition.
A spokesman said: "The use of it as an arcade would secure the re-use of the property, lift the vitality of the area and improve the appearance.
"The nearest house is 20 metres away and I do not think the arcade will disturb residents."
An initial application to open the arcade from 8am-11pm was resubmitted so it opened from 10am.
Coun Janet Storey said: "We wouldn't want it opening any earlier because it could become an attraction for youngsters going to school."
