WILD otters are -- slowly but surely -- returning to the Lancaster and Morecambe area.
That's the verdict from a three year study backed by the Wildlife Trust and United Utilities. The area is said to have 'otters in low numbers, but not expanding.' The long term aim of the project is to reintroduce otters to every area where they have been recorded since 1960. One blow for the project came with the discovery of a dead otter in the Lancaster area which turned out to be pregnant. "Sad as it is we can learn a lot from the dead otters that are reported," said project officer Gail Butterill. The otter population slumped in the 20th century, as a result of pollution and loss of habitat.
