EAST Lancashire MP Nigel Evans has attacked the Post Office over plans to charge customers withdrawing money from cash machines in its branches.
The Ribble Valley Tory has called on the publicly-owned operation to rethink the policy.
Mr Evans said: "The introduction of these charges is a double hit for rural communities already blighted by foot and mouth.
"Many people are finding it difficult to maintain a level of earnings to support their families and this is rubbing salt into their already open wounds. Families are being charged to withdraw their own money from the Post Office.
"We were told that the introduction of cash machines in post offices would help local pensioners and others who are encouraged to take out bank accounts in order to withdraw their money in a new way. They were not told that they would be penalised to do so.
"I am raising this issue with Post Office representatives calling on them to rethink this policy."
