A WELL-KNOWN Darwen policeman retired from the force today, 30 years after he joined at the age of just 16.

Colleagues will be saying their last goodbyes to Sergeant Phil Nowland because he will be wearing his uniform for the last time on his final day of work.

Sergeant Phil Nowland first joined the Lancashire Constabulary as a cadet at the age of just 16, before being appointed an officer only three years later.

Phil, 46, has worked his way around four various posts in Lancashire, including a police officer in Bacup, a uniformed motorcycle officer in Preston and finally a sergeant in Blackburn.

Three generations of his family have been in the police force. His father was a police officer and now his son Mark is an officer in Blackpool.

Inspector Tracie O'Gara, of Darwen Police, said: "I have worked with Phil for over seven years and he has become part of the furniture.

"Although Phil is only 46, he has served his 30 years with the police force and it is now time for him to put his feet up.

"I think Phil's favourite part of his work was when he was working as a motorcycle officer, because he loves bikes of any kind. "He was lucky because he worked doing something he loved that was his hobby as well.

"Phil is extremely well organised and we will miss his experience in the office.

"He is a real character and will help anybody who needs a shoulder to cry on. He will be deeply missed by everybody here."

He completed his last six years working at Darwen with regular officers and specials who he became great friends with over the years.

Phil admits that he will miss everyone when he leaves the force, although now he will be able to take more time listening to his favourite music, Northern Soul, and mountain biking in European countries.

Phil said: "I have loved my time at Darwen and I would really like to stay but I have served my time and it is now time for me to go.

"I will miss everyone."
