HERO Andrew Hargreaves, who saved his two uncles from drowning, has been honoured by his school.

The 13-year-old was presented with the Governors' Cup for Bravery and a certificate on behalf of staff and pupils at Broad Oak High School.

The presentation by the chairman of governors, Mr Laurie Bullas, took place during the Hazel Avenue school's annual prize giving night. Bury's Mayor and Mayoress and Bury North MP David Chaytor were guests of honour at the event.

Andrew, from Falcon Close, Bury, risked his life on Sunday, July 1 when he plunged into freezing waters to reach his uncles Craig Fletcher and David Howarth. The three were enjoying the warm weather at Elton Reservoir when Craig decided to swim out to a boat moored 50 metres from the shore.

The 28-year-old of St Anne's Road, Walmersley got into difficulties and David, also aged 28, of Railway Terrace, Bury, swam to his aid only to find himself in trouble.

Andrew then launched himself further into the water and, with his right leg numbed by cramp, swam across to his struggling uncles.

He told the Bury Times: "The water was freezing but I kept going. I knew my uncles were drowning and I had to do something."

Andrew and David grabbed Craig and led him to the shore. Craig was treated for mild hypothermia by paramedics at the scene but declined hospital treatment.

The school's honour comes after fire chiefs in Bury announced they were nominating Andrew for a bravery award. David will also be nominated for his part in the rescue.

Broad Oak's head teacher Mr Andrew Mackenzie said: "Andrew put the lives of others above his own and showed great strength and courage. Everyone at the school is proud of him."
