BORED youngsters in the Brandlesholme can look forward to a brighter future, following top level discussions about a providing better youth facilities.

After residents expressed serious concern about a lack things to do for children and teenagers, a "task team" involving council Cabinet members discussed the problem.

A report, featuring plans for the Brandlesholme School site, a summer playscheme and youth projects was welcomed at a meeting of Bury West Area Board.

Long term proposals for a multi-sport ballzone and replacement building for the under-5s Playaway scheme were also made.

Councillor John Costello described the report as "exciting" although fellow member for Elton ward, Yvonne Creswell expressed concern that no certain provision had been made for the Playaway scheme.

Funding has now been to install specialist play equipment for disabled and able bodied youngsters at the old school entrance. But permission for work to start at the school may not be given until later this month when concerns about future access to the site will be discussed.

Spare cash from the sale of the wider school site could be used to provide a ball game area, although the priority will be for the revenue to fund additional classroom facilities at Woodbank Primary, which accommodated pupils after the closure of Brandlesholme Primary.

Over the summer holidays, the school field, previously out of bounds, will be opened for use.

After fencing has been erected around the more dangerous parts of the site, gates to the field will be left open.

During the summer, a playscheme will be run for 8-12 year olds at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Purbeck Drive, from July 30 to August 17.

The Youth Information Bus will continue to visit Garside Hey Road on Wednesday evenings, until the end of September.
