CHILDREN in Barnoldswick plan to make the most of their summer holidays by canvassing local companies for help in their bid to create their own wheely park.

The youngsters in the town decided they would like somewhere to play and agreed a wheel park would be ideal and after months of gathering ideas with the help of parents and councillors, their proposals have been encouraged by Pendle Council.

They are now preparing for a Challenge Anneka style project through which they hope to build their own Wheel Park to their own plans.

A report to the West Craven Committee informed members that a sub group had been set up to explore the possibilities of developing a Wheel Park in Victory Park and that the young people had presented the members of this group with a sketched plan and a handmade three dimensional model of their suggestions and proposals.

Councillors decided to encourage the children in their bid to complete their Wheely Challenge by September 22 and in their hunt to find local companies who could help them.

A meeting will take place on Monday, July 23, as most of the children are currently away on their holidays, and it will be decided what part each of the children will play.

Councillor David Whipp, who has been helping the children develop their plans, said: "They are very enthusiastic and ready to get started on this. They are aiming to complete the Wheely Challenge by the end of their September holidays.

"Some of the youngsters will be approaching local business this month to try and find out if they can get enough support to make it happen. The area committee pledged £5,000 towards the project and said it would review the progress at the next meeting on July 31.

"The concern for them is that a start is made but it doesn't get finished as this is the main public park in the town. So there is a desire to see it will be able to be finished before committing to it.
