A SMALL Great Harwood company is at the leading edge of the design and manufacture of high tech systems to control access to banks, building societies and office buildings.

BSB Electronics has won a SMART award from the Department of Trade and Industry to develop a revolutionary system that will work at multiple sites.

TV business guru Sir John Harvey-Jones presented the award to Ian Bend of BSB Electronics at a ceremony at the Manufacturing Institute to honour the North West's winners.

" It would have been very difficult to develop the prototype without the grant," said Mr Bend. "It will be an 18-month project, but we are very hopeful it will generate more business which will enable us to employ more people.

"We want to increase our market share in the UK and abroad where we already have some sales in Spain, South Africa, Portugal and France."

BSB Electronics, which employs nine people, was established 20 years ago and specialises in the design and manufacture of access control equipment.

Mr Bend explained that the systems allowed companies to control entry to their premises. The aim of the prototype was to allow individuals to use their identity card at different locations, with internet links.
