THE region's summer holidays for schools are fast approaching and every pupil will be dreaming of six weeks, free from lessons, uniforms, homework and timetables.
However, freedom can very quickly lead to boredom if there is not enough activity to occupy young minds.
The annual reports of railway line incidents, vandalism and other problems associated with bored teenagers have led staff at the Preston Sports Arena and the University of Central Lancashire to organise a programme of supervised activities for youngsters during part of the school break.
Children can take part in rounders, tennis, cycling, kwik-cricket, orienteering, football and athletics during the holidays, but the real focus is on fun.
Every day there will be general play scheme activities and, in addition, qualified coaches will be helping youngsters work towards recognized awards in athletics, cycling and cricket.
The sessions run between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Friday between July 23 and 31 August.
Andy Hopkins, a supervisor at the centre said: "Any children between the ages of eight and fifteen are welcome.
"We recommend that they bring wet weather clothes, even though it is summer, a packed lunch and plenty of soft drinks."
Anyone interested in the scheme should call the centre on: 01772 761000.
