ROSSENDALE United are preparing to 'give it a go' next season as they return to life in the UniBond First Division.
After 12 years out, the North West Counties Division One champions are entering the unknown when they kick off at Matlock Town on Saturday, August 18.
The players returned to pre season training last Saturday -- and boss Jim McCluskie says he can't wait for kick off.
"All the players are flying. They are relatively inexperienced at this level and we are going into the unknown but we always play like we have nothing to fear.
"I have a good knowledge of the players in the UniBond League because as a player I have been to most of the grounds but it will be new for most of my side but we should all enjoy it together."
McCluskie does admit the ground he is most looking forward to returning to is Witton Albion -- his former club.
"That's one I have looked out for. I enjoyed my time there. We got promoted to the Conference and got to the Trophy final at Wembley, only to lose 3-1 to Colchester.
"I'm looking forward to going back there."
It got tight at the end of last season as Dale chased for the championship, as they were pushed by neighbours Clitheroe and Ramsbottom.
And there could be an even more nervy end to next season after the introduction of the play-offs in the UniBond League.
The top two sides will be promoted into the Premier League and then numbers three, four and five will play it out with the side which finish third from bottom of the Premier League for the last place.
"It will make it very interesting," laughed the Dale boss. "It means anyone who is mid-table and above will still have all to play for right until the end.
"I am hoping we will be up there but there is no pressure on us.
"Pressure was last season when only one side went up and we had to finish top of the league.
"The NWCL Division One is a tough league to get out of but we managed that.
"We know we are well equipped in this league and we will see where we are at Christmas and take it from there.
"And we will be trying to keep our good home form going from last season."
McCluskie hasn't yet added to his squad although there are 'one or two' trialists down at Dark Lane, one a former League player.
"We haven't signed anybody yet though," added the boss.
Rossendale reserves will play in the Lancashire League next season against the likes of Accrington Stanley, Morecambe and Southport's second string.
"Hopefully it will mean we can attract young players from around 17-21 and it will be a good test for them and good for Rossendale," said McCluskie.
