FAR from looking after the interests of the consumer, Countryfile (BBC1, July 1) reported that the government is set to enact, without challenge, an EU directive privatising the inspection of meat at abattoirs.
As with poultry, the slaughterhouse company will have the duty of inspecting, rendering the government inspectors redundant. Inspection by sight will not routinely be backed by testing for bacteria.
