A TEENAGER from Heysham has died after jumping 50 feet into an abandoned quarry.
Ruairi Patrick Jack Lambert, 18, of Grizedale Place, Heysham, is understood to have jumped in to the water at Jackdaw Quarry, Capernwray at 9.35pm on Monday night from high cliffs.
Mr Lambert and a friend jumped in together, but while the friend resurfaced, Mr Lambert did not. The seven people who he was with searched for him, but to no avail.
They were later joined by police and paramedics helped by the force helicopter.
His body was recovered from 17 feet of water at 1.30am on Tuesday by the underwater rescue team.
After being pronounced dead on the scene his body was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
An inquest was opened and adjourned on Wednesday.
A post mortem is also due to be carried out this week.
The tragedy has prompted British Waterways to issue a warning about swimming in unauthorised venues.
A spokesman said: "Please keep swimming for the swimming pools. Although it may look inviting on a hot summer's day the water is frequently far colder than children expect."
The site is owned by the Capernwray Diving School.
