BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent is ready to buy, but only players who can make the Clarets a top-six outfit.

Having missed out on Peter Crouch, Ternent still has the bulk of his fighting fund still available.

He aims to bring in another couple of new faces before the season starts with a midfielder -- but not Brentford's Martin Rowlands -- and possibly another striker on his wanted list.

Ternent has already recruited Gareth Taylor, Wrexham defender Mark McGregor and young keeper Luigi Cennamo and stressed the need to buy quality to mount a promotion challenge.

He said: "I will certainly be strengthening it before the season starts with one or two others.

"I've one or two other irons in the fire. Whether anything comes of it I don't know. I feel the squad is strong enough but, obviously, if I can strengthen it I will.

"But it has to be up to the standard we need to be and our standard now in my book, and what I'm saying to the players, is that we've got to be better than last year.

"That means we've got to be in the top six and that's a tall order with the dough that's flying about in our division. But I'm confident we can do it."

Crouch was the number one target but having brought in Taylor on a permanent basis, Ternent is not concerned about a lack of goalpower.

"I'd been on with that for a long time but it was difficult with them being in receivership. I was a bit disappointed he didn't want to join us because we just needed that bit of competition," he added.

"But I've signed Gareth and we've got Mooro, Payts and John Mullin and Branchy can play up there so we're not struggling."

"And getting Lennie, Branchy and Brisser back is a big step in the right direction. The squad is a little stronger than it was last year, although I would like to add another couple of players."
