ST HELENS Council health chiefs have sent out a warning that many accidents in the home are alcohol-related... peaking during hot weather.
Health promotions officer Andy McCully said: "There is a noticeable trend in the increase of accidents in the home during the summer months. While a number of factors may contribute to this, the one that stands out is the number of drink-related incidents.
"A small amount of alcohol may be good for your health, but obviously the more you consume the more your judgement and co-ordination becomes impaired. This can result in irresponsible behaviour with people taking needless risks which sometimes have tragic consequences.
"It therefore stands to reason that drinking does not mix with a whole range of domestic and recreational activities, ranging from gardening and DIY to taking charge of a garden barbecue. Many a house fire has started as a result of an unattended chip pan bursting into flames after the owner has fallen into a drunken stupor".
Councillor Terry Hanley, Executive Member for Environmental Protection, said: "Most people enjoy a drink while relaxing which is what many of us do over the summer. However, accidents do happen when people fail to drink within sensible limits. That is why the council is supporting the Health Education Authority's 'Think About Drink Campaign'".
