A YEAR in the life of Haydock Park Racecourse is being put on to canvas in a 12-painting series by two of Britain's top sports artists.

Brian and Doreen Meadows from Hindley are particularly renowned in the world of boxing with personal tributes to their work coming from Muhammad Ali and Thomas Hearns.

The first four paintings in the series, entitled 'Race Day at Haydock Park', each depicting flat racing, have now been published and are on display at the course. Racegoers can buy copies of them at Haydock's'Family Funday' meeting on Sunday, July 15.

The couple are regular visitors to Haydock and Brian said: "I like my racing a lot and when Haydock was named UK racecourse of the year in 2000 I began to wonder why there were no paintings of it, like Cheltenham and Epsom."

The racecourse management liked his idea of a series showing life at Haydock over a year and, says Brian, "gave him a free rein".

Paintings showing the National Hunt season and more general pictures of the parade ring and surroundings are still to be published.

Prints of the Haydock Park series start at £10 each. They are available at the racecourse on race days and from Artisan Framing Services (tel. 01942 718602).

First race on Sunday is due off at 2.20pm. Entry to the Newton enclosure is £6, Tattersalls £13, County enclosure £21, and Premier enclosure on the top floor of the Centenary Grandstand £35. Accompanied children under 16 enter free. Senior citizens and students, with appropriate identification, enter Tattersalls and the Newton enclosure at half-price.
