AN investigation is taking place into the cause of a fire which resulted in extensive damage at Padiham Football Club.
Damage to an outside store and toilet area is estimated at several thousands of pounds and the club is checking whether they are covered by insurance.
The fire in the recently renovated property was spotted shortly after 5am yesterday.
Inside the building were chairs and tables used for visitors to the club and for events such as barbecues.
Club secretary Alan Smith, said the fire was a setback to the club as it prepared for the coming season in the North West Counties League. He said: "The outside toilets are a condition of competing in the league although there are other toilet facilities in the clubhouse."
Mr Smith said the store and toilet building had only recently been re-felted within the last fortnight.
The fierce fire had burnt through the roof, which was completely destroyed.
He said: "I don't know whether we are insured for this building and that is being checked out.
"I would think the cost of repairs will run into a good number of thousands of pounds."
A spokesman for Padiham fire and rescue service said the property was well alight when they arrived and added: "The building suffered 75 per cent damage, with the roof gone.
"The cause of the fire is still under investigation."
