THE first meeting of the new cabinet of Lancashire County Council took place today (Thursday).

Among the items on today's agenda was a discussion of how local Government decision making is to be made much more open to the public, with the introduction of a new Internet service.

The Democratic Information Service (DIS), launched on the county council's website, allows the public to see cabinet papers and the decisions made by the council.

Subjects for future decision are also posted on the website, and members of the public can email their views directly back to the council.

Under the new system, cabinet members will take responsibility for different areas of local government, from education to highways. They will meet monthly to consider major policy issues and make recommendations to meetings of the full county council.
