BUDDING poets from a Preston primary school are celebrating after winning prizes for a poetry competition they almost forgot they had entered!
Due to a fire at Brindle Gregson Lane CP School two months ago, staff had forgotten all about the junior school children's entries to a poetry competition organised by Preston Writers' Guild.
The school building in Bournes Row, in Hoghton, burnt to the ground in the blaze and pupils were given four-weeks off school while temporary classrooms were installed.
It was only after returning to class staff were informed that the school had scooped the 'big prize' with pupils winning prizes in each of their age categories.
Pupil Laura Stack, 10, of Gregson Lane, Hoghton, landed the overall school prize with her poem Icarus Wings and won £50 for the school.
Headteacher Vivienne Clark said: "The prizes really boosted moral and I was astounded at the quality of the poems the children produced."
