VALUE for money is something we in the Journal editorial department like to think we give our loyal readers.

We are not so sure that is what at least four elderly council tenants were getting when they handed their vacuum cleaners to a man who called at their homes within a sheltered housing complex.

Unusually, we thought, the man who called - unasked - on people in their 80s and 90s to "service" appliances, left them with a bill for about £38 apiece to be paid when he returned the cleaners the following day. We wondered how he knew how much it would cost beforehand.

We have been assured that the door-to-door caller's details have been passed on to the relevant authorities. What is not outside the law is not always morally correct. Remember big Geoff RUGBY fans will mourn the death of Rugby League character Geoff Clarkson, who played a big hand in two of Leigh RFC's most famous victories. As long as rugby is played in this town, the Yorkshire giant's name will be remembered with affection alsongisde that of another deceased member of the 1971 cup winning side - smiling Peter Smethurst. Determined effort RAIN stopped play at Firs Park 80th birthday celebrations, but the core of people who have strived hard to make the park and lake areas somewhere to be proud of were undeterred. They had to pack up but are determined to stage the event again. Let's hope they're blessed with a scorcher and a bumper turnout.
