DISCIPLINARY action looks set to be brought against a dentist and an anaesthetist following the death of a five-year-old girl at a Leyland surgery.

The decision by South Lancashire Health Authority follows the publication of an independent inquiry into the death of Karla Selley.

She never regained consciousness after having a tooth extracted at Towngate Dental Practice, Leyland, in August 1999.

The authority accepted an independent report's recommendation and have reported the incident involving dentist Michael Lane to the Chief General Dental Council and anaesthetist George Vanner to the General Medical Council for not responding to national guidelines.

Both Mr Lane and Dr Vanner appeared at Preston Crown Court earlier this year, charged with Karla's manslaughter.

During the hearing a home office pathologist told the court that Karla died from a blockage in her airways during the anaesthetic.

She could have died from a heart abnormality she was found to be suffering from, the court was told.

The judge directed a not guilty verdict but Mr Lane, of Bolton, was fined £3,000 for breaching health and safety regulations.
