PAUL SMITH could be ready to stay in the North-West by making the switch from Burnley to Rochdale.
The winger was thought to be on his way to Scotland after being released by the Clarets this summer.
However, a potential move to Kilmarnock hasn't come off and Rochdale are hoping to lure the 24-year-old to Spotland to help their promotion push from Division Three.
Dale boss Steve Parkin believes the capture of Smith, who ended his eight-year association with Burnley when his contract wasn't renewed at the end of last season, would be a major coup for his side which missed out on the play-offs on the final day of the campaign in May.
Parkin said: "I have spoken to Paul Smith over the last month or so and at length last week.
"I expect a decision from him shortly. He played 23 games for Burnley last season and he is the natural left winger we cried out for last season.
"We are at a critical stage with Paul and if he did choose to come here it would be a major signing for us. I personally would say it would be a coup for the board and for myself if he did sign.
"We have had deep negotiations with Paul and his agent. At the moment things are looking quite bright and I expect a decision very shortly."
