SUNSEEKERS have been warned to keep an eye out for 'rogue' sunglasses which fail to give proper protection.
Some found on sale elsewhere in the country can cause serious damage, experts say, prompting trading standards officers at Blackburn with Darwen Council to urge people to avoid shades that do not carry the 'CE' European safety mark.
The warning follows the launch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind One Vision campaign, supported by the council, which urges people to look after their eyes,.
Chief Trading Standards Officer Chris Allen said non-CE glasses, illegal throughout Europe, were unlikely to offer any protection to the eyes from harmful ultra violet rays.
He said: "Sunglasses that do not filter out UV light can cause more damage to eyes than no glasses at all."
The CE mark will be on the sunglasses or an attached label, giving information about ultra violet.
Chris added: "If you see sunglasses on sale that do not carry the CE mark and don't offer UV protection, do not buy them.
