VISITORS to Darwen Library have been promised a better service once £10,000 refurbishment works are completed at the centre.
The Knott Street-based premises are to close for two days at the end of next month so workmen can replace the historic front doors with hi-tech new automatic ones.
The work is being carried out after library bosses said they were inundated with complaints from users that the front doors were far too heavy.
A new information desk will also be installed.
Improvement works will be carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday August 22 and 23.
Catherine Snelling, library manager, said: " Even though the doors are really lovely and date back to 1908, they are really heavy.
"It has been a problem for some time and we've had a lot of people asking if we can do anything about them.
"A new information desk will also be fitted because we also deal with all the bookings for the Darwen Library Theatre and we are very cramped at the moment.
"The current desk at the back of the library should give us a bit more space. The improvements are a great relief."
