TAXI fares are going up but in a roundabout way!
Hackney drivers themselves did not want the "night" rate to be increased from £1.70 to £2 for the first eight-tenths of a mile.
They worried that customers who had had a drink would complain that it was 50p more than the "day" rate of £1.50.
Licensing bosses accepted their argument, and instead have cut the distance the Tariff 2 charge covers to the first six-tenths of a mile.
In effect, this allows the trade to increase fares but reduce the risk of confrontation.
Councillors approved this at a meeting of the licensing panel. The new fares will start on September 1. The change does not affect private hire companies.
