A SPORTS project aimed at introducing children with disabilities to sport is proving a great success.
The Preston Panthers club is co-ordinated through Preston Disability Sports Forum, in conjunction with Preston Disc and West View Leisure Centre.
It's aim is to increase the number of young people involved in sport and leisure out of school.
Preston Panthers secretary John Coxhead said: "We heard about the success of the Blackpool Bears, and thought why can't this work in Preston?
"We decided to investigate into the possibility of putting these ideas into practise in Preston.
"After sending out more than 100 questioners, and holding meetings at various schools with parents and teachers we prepared our plans.
"We approached West View Leisure Centre.
"West View were very helpful and offered us the use of their main hall and help in setting up an activity programme along with the equipment, and without approach, Preston's sports development unit supplied the staff and a trained coach for every activity.
"The opportunities available to young disabled people outside school hours are very limited and as a result they are often excluded from normal social circles.
"This club will help young people with disabilities to develop new interests, build relationships with adults other than teachers and carers and also make a few friends."
