PLANS for the controversial Broughton by-pass have finally been approved -- despite calls for even more consultation on the issue.
Members of Lancashire County Council's development control committee approved plans for the multi-million pound project at a meeting yesterday (Thursday).
Council chiefs at borough and county level have been amending plans for the by-pass since 1995 when plans for the road were first drawn up.
The by-pass will occupy a narrow stretch of land to the east of Broughton village, commencing in the south at the M6/M55 roundabout.
It will cross rural land, and Whittingham Lane, before joining up with the A6 at a roundabout junction to be created to the north of Broughton.
The meeting was told the new road would relieve chronic congestion problems experienced at the Broughton cross-roads -- where the A6 meets Whittingham Lane -- over a number of years.
