A 35-YEAR-OLD man who sexually assaulted a woman in her own home was jailed for three years.

At Bolton Crown Court, a judge said Geoffrey Makin was at risk of committing further offences.

Reports from both probation and psychiatric experts concluded Makin, of Long Lane, Hindley, did not seem to appreciate the severity of the offence, or the effect it had on his victim.

The court heard Makin subjected Susan Gummerson, 52, of Wigan, and who has waived her right to anonymity, to a terrifying sex ordeal.

June Morris, prosecuting, said at 4.50am on October 1 last year, after tricking his way into her home, the victim phoned her son, with whom Makin claimed to be friends. Her son spoke to Makin but did not know him.

She gave Makin two glasses of water and became alarmed when he asked her for a cuddle. He told her he found her attractive, that he was lonely and needed affection.

She asked him to leave and after getting another glass of water, he grabbed her, forcing her to kiss him. She told him to stop, saying she was old enough to be his mother, but he carried on with the attack until her dog bit his leg.

She managed to break free and ran for the front door, chased by Makin, who was still being attacked the dog. He followed her outside and while the dog bit him, she managed to get back inside the house and called police.

In interview, Makin denied being there but when the police indicated they had forensic evidence from a glass, he sought legal advice and admitted the offence.

The original charge had been burglary with intent to rape but he admitted indecent assault.

Thomas Fitzpatrick, defending, said Makin had been under stress and as a diabetic, was suffering from a hypoglycaemic attack and could not remember exactly what had happened.

He said Makin had trouble with relationships, had separated from his wife after a short marriage and was under stress because of the trial.

Earlier this year, Makin had been acquitted by a jury of sexually assaulting a woman in Borsdane Wood in 1997.

Judge Gillian Ruaux jailed Makin for three years and extended the period he will serve on licence for an extra two years. He was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years. the victim

saw a man in the garden who claimed to know her son and asked if he was in. She let him in and once inside he asked for a drink of water and said his name was Andrew Martin. The woman phoned her son

last October.

Once inside her home, Makin told her he found her attractive and said he was lonely and needed affection. After she asked to him to leave, Makin suddenly grabbed and kissed her and then indecently assaulted her, relenting only when attacked by her dog.

The shocked victim fled from the house, pursued by Makin who, tried to stop her. Again, the dog bit him and the woman managed to return to her home.
