TRICORNERED hats, handbells and lungs of iron -- it could only be the Town Criers British Championships in Blackpool town centre!
A group of 26 criers from across the country competed in the annual event held on Saturday afternoon in Birley Street, following a lively procession through the town centre led by Blackpool samba band Poco Loco.
The event was organised by Blackpool Town Centre Forum, and hosted by Blackpool town crier Barry McQueen. Town centre manager Nigel Hanson said: "It went extremely well. It was very well received by the general public." The town hopes to host another championship next year, he added.
The competition was won by Paul Gough from Bedworth and Nuneaton, with Michael Wood from Hull in second place and Kevin Griffiths from Barnoldswick third.
