LOG on and get the lowdown on hi-tech! That's the invitation being extended to novice and experienced computer buffs living in East Bury.

For the town's popular Jinnah Day Care Centre is now offering taster sessions to allow the uninitiated to master the mechanics of surfing the world wide web.

The information communication technology (ICT) project, which will run for two years, has been established with lead organisation Bury College and other partners.

Speaking during the launch, Jinnah centre manager Mr Jawaid Iqbal explained: "The project will now provide taster sessions for the community in East Bury. "The college will have have someone down here on a part-time basis to enable people to access the Internet and learn basic computing."

He added: "Those using the service will be helped by the college staff who will facilitate the learning."

Mr Iqbal said the new project would play a key role in building links with schools, community groups and other organisations in the area.

Taster sessions will now take place at the Alfred Street-based Jinnah on Monday mornings as well as Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

The two-hour sessions will allow novice computer users the opportunity to be taught all the important elements of ICT.

Jinnah now accommodates two terminals which will be in constant use throughout the two year duration of the initiative.

"The whole purpose of the project is to encourage people who want to progress on to formal learning at other centres," Mr Iqbal continued.

"A lot of people from the community have already shown interest in computers and I'm confident we'll get a cross-section coming in for the taster sessions.

"We have been working on this for the past two years and I'm delighted the project has come to fruition."
