THE dangers of summer fun in the sun for children are being highlighted by St Helens Council who have issued guidelines to help protect youngsters from the dangers of the sun.

Children should wear sunblock with an SPF of 30 at all times in the sun and babies under six months should not be exposed to direct sunlight at all. Other tips include:

Apply generous amounts of sun cream 20 to 30 minutes before going outside so it can take full effect.

Re-apply cream every two hours and immediately after swimming or if the child is sweating a lot.

Pay particular attention to the collar, cheek bones and nose.

Make sure children wear hats to reduce sun exposure on the head. Between 11am and 4pm, when the sun is at its most intense, encourage them to play in the shade.

Children may burn even in hazy weather. Remember up to 80 per cent of ultraviolet rays can pass through light cloud, haze and even fog.

Check the children regularly throughout the day, making sure they are not burning and have plenty of drinks to avoid dehydration.

Says Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Terry Hanley: "Children have very sensitive skin and it is vital that these procedures be followed to avoid serious problems which can occur when overexposed to sun."
