BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent looks like he could go Greek again to bolster his strikeforce.

Ternent missed last night's 2-0 win over Wrexham in the opening game of the Isle of Man tournament as he flew out of Douglas in the hope of adding a new face to the Burnley squad in preparation for next season's First Division campaign.

The Clarets management team were remaining tight-lipped about any new signings but it is believed he could be trying to tie up a deal for Greek Under 21 international Dimitri Papadopoulos.

Ternent watched the frontman play for his country against England Under 21s last month and has had good reports on the youngster who helped his side to promotion to the Greek top flight last season. The Burnley boss has already had success with Greek keeper Nik Michopoulos , following it up with the addition of Greek-Italian goalkeeper Luigi Cennamo in a six month deal this summer, and Ternent has said buying from abroad is tempting at the moment because of the high prices in Britain.

All assistant boss Sam Ellis would say after last night's game when asked about the rumour that Ternent was doing business was: "It is a very good rumour."

Ternent does already have good options up front with the likes of Gareth Taylor, Ian Moore, Andy Payton and currently has Tony Ellis on trial.

But Papadopoulos, who was priced by some Greek sources at around £1m, would give Ternent another option and could be a good investment for the future. Meanwhile, striker Taylor celebrated his first game in a Burnley shirt since signing a permanent deal earlier this month with a goal in the victory over Second Division Wrexham in the Clarets first pre-season game.

Skipper Steve Davis scored the other with new boy Mark McGregor, the former Wrexham defender, and Cennamo expected to make their debuts either tomorrow night against the Isle of Man or on Wedneday against Oldham.

Burnley's large travelling faithful did get their first glimpses of the four trialists at Turf Moor with midfielders Paul Hughes and Dimitri de Conde, from Belgium, winger Alan Moore and Ellis all coming on.

"It was difficult for those coming in," said assistant boss Ellis. "But they did as well as could have been expected.

"They had to get their chance as we need to see them.

"It was a good work out for all the lads as they all are at this time of season. It was a good, competitive game and Wrexham made it difficult for us. That is what you need to get yourselves sharp.

"But that is what we have come over for. The gaffer likes this competition and it has done us well in the past."

Burnley's most impressive figure on the park was winger Glen Little who showed he is as keen as ever for the season to start.

Little, who had struggled with a hamstring injury last term, made the first goal for Taylor and entertained the fans in the first half, twisting and turning on the left wing.

"Glen looked sharp, he looked good, but all the players have said they could be sharper and bit better. It was our first really competitive game and you always feel you can improve."

Graham Branch and Lennie Johnrose, who missed the end of last season with knee and ankle injuries respectively, should also get their chance in the games later this week while Payton and John Mullin also sat on the sidelines for last night's game.

"All the ones who came over will get their chance," confirmed Ellis.

HOLDERS Oldham won the first game of the Isle of Man tournament 3-0 against Isle of Man yesterday afternoon.

Lee Duxbury won the man of the match -- but got the glass trophy in pieces after it was reportedly dropped by the Latics commercial manager Bob Gorril.

Gareth Taylor won the honour for Burnley last night -- and received his in one piece!

IN the Isle of Man tournament, there are four teams involved this year with the top two playing each other on Saturday afternoon. Burnley and Oldham currently head the group. There has to be a result in every game with a penalty shoot-out if there is a draw after 90 minutes.
