A 26-YEAR-OLD man has drowned off Blackpool Promenade in the early hours of the morning.
Police named the dead man as Benjamin Hitchings from Guildford, Surrey.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said prior to the drowning, reports had been received of people dodging waves near Central Pier at around 1.30am, of Tuesday, July 24 followed by a report that one man had gone into the water.
"At that time the tide was in and the sea was rough," he said.
The police helicopter and inshore lifeboat attended, and at 1.53am a body was spotted near to the pier.
"At 2.30am the police helicopter found that the body had been washed up near the life boat station near Central Pier.
"The deceased was conveyed to Blackpool Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," the spokesman said.
