SWIMMERS are being warned to keep away from canals, rivers and lakes.
The hot weather warning to stick to official swimming pools comes from British Waterways as temperatures rise this summer.
Canals and rivers might look inviting places to take a dip during hot weather, but they make dangerous swimming pools.
Anyone tempted to splash into local waterways could be gambling with their lives, is the stern message from the authority.
Tom Rowe, a British Waterways manager, pointed out that in addition to the coldness of the water, other dangers such as shallow waters, objects under the surface and currents could put swimmers at risk. He said: "Enjoy canals, but don't swim in them. Our inland waterways are wonderful places to enjoy walking, boating, fishing and a host of other activities amid beautiful scenery. There is plenty to do without risking your life."
