POLICE said a multiple road collision on the M61 motorway on Saturday was caused when a motorist lost control of his car.

Four other cars then crashed when they tried to take evasive action.

The incident happened about 8.40am on the northbound carriageway near Chorley.

Control was lost of a Ford Escort estate driven by a 54-year-old Salford man and two cars swerved and went down the embankment. Two other cars also collided with the Escort.

Two of the drivers were taken the Royal Preston Hospital and eight other people were treated at the scene.
