THE riots in Burnley have been a long time coming. The tension was evident for all to see. In neighbouring towns the tension is also there.
The problem is not racism, bigotry or political. It is purely down to the race card being played to gain anything that is wanted (or not wanted).
The groups and legislation for race relations and racial equality are there for the right reasons, but are being exploited by people who have taken advantage of and ruined a very useful system of protection.
It is unfortunate that in the year 2001 we need this protection, but it is a sad reflection on human nature. People will be racist, but these are the small minority.
Racism also exists towards white people, but nothing can be done to report it effectively.
Most of the problems stem from the fact that the white majority see the Asian minority "getting away with murder because the police can't act due to the fear of being branded racists" and that "they get everything on a plate."
This, to an extent, is true, due to the fact that there are certain members of the Asian community who will play the race card at the slightest thing.
We need to treat all people as equals, stop listening to all the nonsense about petty racism, stop running around after certain groups of people and start addressing the real problems, not using scapegoats.
I believe that if inequality is eradicated, the problems facing our multi-cultural society will fade away. If the status quo prevails, there will be more rioting, but this time people will get hurt.
I am not a racist, sexist, bigot or any of the horrible things that people who speak out get called. I am open towards all groups and classes of society. Maybe I am just an idealist, but I hope that people will change for the better.
