A LAST-GASP goal would have normally sent the Burnley players into despair but the 90-minute run out in the Isle of Man tournament final was of more significance than the result.

Craig Faulconbridge fired home the winner in injury time to give Brian Flynn's side a record fourth victory in the event .

The 20-year-old ran onto a defence-splitting pass by substitute Michael Blackwood before firing past Nik Michopoulos.

Stand-in manager Sam Ellis -- with Stan Ternent missing the match because of his son's wedding -- will have been disappointed with the way Wrexham won with the game heading for penalties but it was a quality finish from Faulconbridge.

"I was hoping there would be no penalties but I also didn't want it to end that way either," said Ellis after the game. Robins boss Brian Flynn, however, was delighted his Second Division side upset the odds to beat his former club.

"I was pleased with the way we played against a side who expect to be up there challenging for promotion from the First Division next season," said Flynn. "I thought we deserved it on chances created."

Burnley had defeated the Welsh side 2-0 in the opening game of the tournament where Burnley fielded more or less the team which finished last season's campaign so strongly.

The Clarets management, however, continued to mix it up in their bid to give everyone a piece of the action and made a number of changes for the final.

Recent signing Mark McGregor started in the right back slot against the side he left in the summer and showed some promising interactions with Paul Weller down the right wing.

It was his cross which should have set the ball rolling for Burnley but Gareth Taylor, almost on the goalline, headed over in the early stages of the match.

Taylor partnered Andy Payton up front as the Clarets management team take a look at all their options with five strikers pressing for a starting slot.

But the 28-year-old former Manchester City man, the Clarets top scorer with two goals in the tournament, was guilty of a couple of missed opportunities.

Weller also provided a good cross for Taylor and he did the same for Payton who just couldn't connect properly to test keeper Kristian Rogers.

But it was Michopolous who was the busier goalie as the Burnley back-line -- with skipper Steve Davis on the bench -- were made to work hard.

The Greek goalkeeper had to be at his best a number of times to deny Darren Ferguson while Hector Sam found the side netting in a good move down the right for the Robins.

And defender Gordon Armstrong was alert after Robin Gibson's shot was pushed onto Armstrong's foot by Rogers and it was almost an own goal until the former Sunderland defender raced back to clear the ball off the line.

Glen Little was introduced to see if he could liven the game up for the Clarets and he did make a couple of good runs down the wing but they were all to no avail especially with Wrexham's 6ft 7in defender Denis Lawrence, a former Trinidad and Tobago colleague of Ian Cox, making his height count in the area.

The Robins made a telling introduction of their own bringing on former Claret player Kevin 'Rooster' Russell and he got a warm reception from the travelling Burnley faithful.

With time ticking away it looked like Burnley would have to practise their penalty kicks again -- although Kevin Ball might have refused to take one after missing his last two -- the latest against Oldham on Wednesday night.

But at the death Faulconbridge came up with the goods to seal a morale-boosting win for Wrexham.

Burnley may have missed out on this trophy but they will be aiming for bigger prizes at the end of the season.
