BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent will take the next step in deciding his XI which will start the new First Division campaign when they face Premiership side Everton tomorrow night at Turf Moor.

The Clarets boss has swapped and changed his team in the Isle of Man giving all his squad a run out.

And, although he will be disappointed they lost 1-0 to Wrexham in the Manx tournament final on Saturday, the Clarets management team were not too downhearted after having a good look at all their options.

"I was disappointed to lose the game but it has been all about coming over for a week of pre-season training and we are all better now than we when we came over," said assistant manager Sam Ellis.

"We have made good progress.

"We have put teams out giving every player their chance over the week. Everyone has got their fair share and they should be fitter and better."

Trialists Alan Moore, Paul Hughes and Dimitri De Conde didn't feature in the final but Ternent aims to come to a decision on them soon.

Hard midfielder Hughes and left winger Alan Moore have particularly impressed.

"We have had a good look at them but that is up to the manager and he will make some decisions later," added Ellis.

Greek Under 21 striker Dimitri Papadopoulos is expected to make his debut against Walter Smith's side as the Burnley boss examines his strikeforce with Gareth Taylor, Ian Moore, Andy Payton and Tony Ellis all trying to stake their claim for a starting slot.

In the centre of defence, the Burnley boss has played both Gordon Armstrong and Ian Cox alongside skipper Steve Davis and will have a difficult decision to make there.

And new boy Mark McGregor, who started against his former club on Saturday, did well in the right back position and will be aiming to make it his own, although Dean West may have something to say about that.

Meanwhile, Paul Gascoigne looks set to play some part at Turf Moor after coming on for 13 minutes in the Toffeemen's 3-1 win over Preston on Saturday.

The 34-year-old former England midfielder is being introduced slowly by Smith after all the setbacks of last season.

"He was glad to get on the pitch on Preston and it will give him a boost. We will step it up over the next week or so," said the Everton boss.

American international Joe Max-Moore, David Unsworth and Kevin Campbell got the goals at Deepdale.

"It was a good work out. It is good to get these type of games under the belt, they are very beneficial," added Smith who is expected to play a similar side against the Clarets.
