A MAN was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke and shock after climbing out of a window to escape a house fire early today.
Firecrews tackled the blaze which started in the kitchen of the property in Laxey Road, Blackburn.
Leading firefighter, Dave Hilliard, based at Blackburn said: "We believe that the man came home and started to make something to eat. He then fell asleep on the settee."
"The fire was burning for about four hours. Luckily for him, he woke up and was able to climb out of the lounge window."
"The property was not fitted with smoke detectors, so it could have been a lot more serious. For the sake of a few pounds, a smoke detector can save lives."
The kitchen of the property was severely damaged by fire and smoke caused damage to three bedrooms and the lounge. The fire was so severe, the electricity was disconnected by engineers from United Utilities.
"This man was very fortunate that the windows to the house could be opened and he was able to get out. If people call us we will do a free fire assessment of their homes and fit smoke detectors."
