Chorley Chess Club is moving in the right directions -- thanks to a £600 cash boost.

The club will use the cash -- a Chorley council sport, arts and community development grant -- to help develop its rising standards and attract more new, young members.

The money will not only pay for new chess equipment, but will also be used to further develop the junior section, create links with local schools and cover the cost of coaching young people to county and possibly national standard.

Robert Hart, the club's junior coaching officer, said: "The £600 will allow us to expand our development work and in particular to make more young people aware of the game.

"Chess has an appeal to all ages, but nowadays many youngsters are not introduced to it.

"That is a shame and hopefully this funding will help to change that situation. Who knows, in the years to come, thanks to what has begun today, Chorley could become a regional centre of expertise."

The grant is one of just a number made by the council and already a November 28 deadline has been set for the next round of applications.

Councillor Cath Hoyle, Chorley's executive member or sport, arts and community development, said: "The development fund continues to provide vital support to our local sports, arts and community groups, support which might not otherwise be available."
