HISTORIC Lea Bank School in Waterfoot is being suggested as a possible site for a new town hall for Rossendale.

The Hurstwood Group has submitted a project for a luxury housing development but planning chairman Coun Chris Wadsworth has suggested it could replace the town hall in Rawtenstall.

Two businessmen have put forward proposals to redevelop Rawtenstall town centre, including the town hall, bus station, former Liberal Club and car parks behind the Valley Centre for shops.

Coun Wadsworth said: "There are several offers on the table for the town hall and if they go-ahead we will be looking for a replacement site. I have suggested Lea Bank because it would retain the building as a public utility, even though it is currently in private ownership."

"Whether it is large enough I do not know but it is something we could consider."

7when the bids will be discussed and options tabled for a future town hall.

Hurstwood's housing plan prompted more than 1,000 letters of objection, many petitions and the formation of the Save Lea Bank Campaign. Planners are negotiating with the company to put together a scaled down proposal.
