REGARDING your article (LET, July 24), on improving facilities on the canal in East Lancashire, readers may be interested to know that the section south of Rishton has been improved, with a new towpath and a major wall construction at Shaw Brook.
On this section is a red sandstone arch bridge from which one can have a panoramic view of East Lancashire and on a clear day, can see through the Ribble Valley to Ingleborough.
Unfortunately, anyone wanting to sit on the bridge to enjoy the sights will have to do it in less comfort as a week after the opening of the towpath, the large stones on the parapet of the bridge, after being there for 200 years, were pushed into the canal, along with a section of the motorway wall.
As your headline said: 'Canal folk sail into uncharted waters.' They may get stuck under the bridge.
DAVID SUTCLIFFE, Master Barn Farm, Rishton.
